Michael O'Dea was born on June 15, 1823 in Milltown in the Parish of Aglishcormick, County Limerick. Godparents were Daniel and Winifred Ryan.1 He was the son of John O'Dea and Penelope Meagher. Michael O'Dea married Mary Purtell on June 1, 1848 in Yass, New South Wales. Micahel and Mary began their courtship on board ship, but apparently Michael tried his hand at other ventures before returning to Australia to marry her.2,3 Michael O'Dea died on July 13, 1876 in Cloverfield, Moyne Shire, Victoria, at age 53. The probate record which was processed in Melbourne on August 24, 1876, indicates that Michael's residence was at Cloverfield.4,5 He was buried in Tower Hill Cemetery, Koroit, Moyne Shire, Victoria.5
He immigrated on July 31, 1844 to New South Wales. Michael and Mary Purtel immigrated to Australia on the same ship. Michael was a bounty emigrant onboard the St Vincent. His ikmmighration record states that he was a farm Labourer aged 20, from New Palace, Co Limerick, and both parents deceased. It says he "Has a sister in the Colony married to a man named Lynch." The householders certifying character were from Caherconlish. His employer in Ireland was named as Thomas Dea.6
According to the Lynch family research, Michael Followed his sister Bridget O'Dea Lynch to Australia. He originally arrived in Port Jackson, Sydney, and from there he went to California as a gold miner. From there he returned to Yass in NSW where he married in 1848 before coming overland to the Towerhill district. At Killarney Victoria, he was originally a tenant farmer on the Rutledge's "Farnham survey" at Look Out Hill. He build the original Carleton (Killarney) inn and the current pub is verson 3 after two fires. He also went goldmining at Ballarat before settling down to farm at "Cloverfield" which is north of the Killarney hotel. Family legend has it that his capacity to buy land, build a pub and set up as a trader in Ballarat came from his gold earnings. He left a will on August 24, 1876 in Cloverfield, Moyne Shire, Victoria. In his will, Michael leaves his estate to his daughter Mary Linehan with the provision that she "provide for my Wife, Mary O'Dea, with all she may require during her lifetime."7
