     Thomas Bartley was born on January 6, 1798 in County Limerick.1 He was the son of Edmund Bartley and Margaret _____. Thomas Bartley married Margaret Day, daughter of Thomas O'Dea and Ellen _____, on January 11, 1818 in Kilteely In the Parish of Aglishcormick, County Limerick. Witnesses to the wedding were Thomas Dea and John Noonan.2 Thomas Bartley died on June 18, 1873 in 90 London Street, Boston, Suffolk County, Massachusetts, at age 75.3,4 He was buried in Mount Auburn Catholic Cemetery, Boston, Suffolk County, Massachusetts. . The tombstone reads: "Erected by Catherine Bartley in memory of her father Thomas Bartley who died June 18, 1873, aged 78 years, a native of the Parish of Kilteely, Co. Limerick, Ireland, also of her mother Margaret who died Nov 18, 1855, aged 52 years, also of her sister Margaret who died Dec 27, 1872, aged 53."5
     He witnessed the birth of Mary Agnes Day on December 5, 1845 in Milltown in the Parish of Aglishcormick, Kilteely, County Limerick. Mary's godparents were Thomas Bartley and Mary Murnane.2 Thomas Bartley witnessed the marriage of Timothy Dorsey and Ellen Day on February 14, 1847 in County Limerick.2 Thomas Bartley and Margaret Day immigrated on August 11, 1849 to Boston, Suffolk County, Massachusetts. The Bartley family arrived in Boston on the Sunbeam.6 Thomas Bartley was naturalized on January 30, 1851 in Boston, Suffolk County, Massachusetts.1 He witnessed the baptism of Margaret Bartley on January 24, 1853 in St. Mary Church, Lawrence, Essex County, Massachusetts. Godparents were Thomas Bartley and Margaret Day.7

1826Thomas owned only a small bit of land, barely more than an acre. He lived immediately next door to Thomas O'Dea whose daughter, Margaret, Thomas had married in 1818.Tithe Applotment Book, Milltown in the Parish of Aglishcormick, County Limerick8
from 1830 to 1850The Tenure Books for Miltown cover land rentals beginning in 1830. Most of these leases were for “for life” which meant for the life of the person holding the lease and not necessarily for his or her offspring. Because of the large number of emigrations because of the Famine, this book is hard to read since names were simply crossed out and others written over them when a person left his or her land holding.

From the Tenure Book for Miltown, we conclude the following:

In 1830, Thomas Day, son of John, rented a dairy, house and land (a little over 6 acres ) from Mrs. Charlotte Wolfe and a second house and land (an additional 36 acres) as well. In addition, he rented a couple of acres to John Reordan “at will” (probably a hired man). Over the years, Thomas acquired more and more land in Miltown: 1) a house and land (over 4 acres) from Matthew Day, 2) house and land from Honora Day (the house was apparently destroyed after Thomas took over the property), 3) a house and land from Michael Day, 4) a house and land (about 8 acres) from Sally Day, 5) a bit of land from Norrie Day who was living on it free by permission of the above Sally, and 6) more land from Michael Day.

The other original land holders in 1830 were Robert Day, Thomas Day (son of Darby) and Thomas Bartley. When Thomas died, his lease was taken over initially by his son, Darby, and when Darby emigrated in 1848, the land was taken over by Robert Day. Likewise, when Thomas Bartley emigrated in 1849, Robert took over his land as well.

While there were eleven different land holders in 1830, by 1850, this number had been reduced to four: 1) Thomas, the son of John, and his hired man, John Reardon, Robert Day, Thomas’ brother, and Michael Day, possibly the son of John and brother of Thomas.
